Four individuals, including an 18-year-old man named Blake Davids and three teenagers aged between 14 and 16, were apprehended in Sydenham and Newlands East just a few hours before Tasneem's funeral, in a joint operation conducted by Newlands police detectives, Detective Warrant Officer Viresh, and the Hawks tracking team.
The accused faced charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, appearing in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The tragic sequence of events unfolded during what appeared to be a night of joyriding on January 7, where Tasneem, accompanied by the accused, was driving around Wentworth, Sydenham, and Newlands areas before parking at the grounds during the early morning hours of Monday.
An altercation ensued between Tasneem and the accused, escalating to a point where she was shot multiple times with a pistol. The suspects fled on foot, leaving behind a life cut short. The breakthrough in the case came through CCTV footage at a local garage, capturing the suspects in the company of Tasneem.
A source close to the investigation revealed that Tasneem was a witness in a murder case linked to a local gang, shedding light on a complex web of connections. Amidst the tragedy, social media became a platform for various images and videos of Tasneem, some depicting her holding firearms while seated in vehicles.
While acknowledging the negative media coverage and misinformation circulating on social platforms, a relative, who chose to remain unnamed, spoke about Tasneem's vibrant personality, social interactions, and passion for aiding others. Despite the complexities surrounding her relationships, Tasneem's dedication to helping others extended to baby homes, animal rescue centers, and even organizing a Christmas celebration for orphans.
The relative emphasized that Tasneem, like any young person, made both good and bad decisions, and while justice must prevail, a life was lost, leaving a void in the hearts of those who knew her. Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed that Newlands police were actively investigating the case of murder, unveiling a narrative that intertwines joyriding, alleged gang affiliations, and a life tragically cut short.
