During the heist, Mashinini lost his middle finger in a shootout with the police. Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli, the provincial spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as Hawks, provided details of the crime. The perpetrators not only targeted the cash van but also stole firearms belonging to security personnel. They further utilized explosives to breach a safe.

The response from law enforcement was swift, with the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Mangaung Metro Task Team engaging in a high-speed pursuit. Following an intense exchange of gunfire, the authorities managed to corner the getaway vehicle, leading to the arrest of Serumula. Subsequent investigations and operations resulted in the recovery of stolen cash, firearms (including high-caliber ammunition), and explosives.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohobeleli revealed that the suspects were linked to a series of hijackings and motor vehicle thefts in Gauteng. These stolen vehicles were subsequently employed in cash-in-transit robberies, serving as getaway vehicles or being deliberately destroyed after the criminal activities.

Remarkably, Mashinini, who initially escaped, was later tracked down due to a significant piece of evidence he left behind—a severed middle finger. This crucial clue was found at the crime scene, positively identifying him. On November 13, 2020, Mashinini was located and apprehended in Benoni, where he was attempting to evade capture.

Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, the head of the Hawks in the Free State, commended the law enforcement officers involved in the operation. Major General Bokaba praised their dedication, quick response, and bravery, which ultimately led to the successful apprehension of the two suspects. The recovery of stolen assets and the dismantling of the criminal network involved in multiple heinous activities underscore the effectiveness of collaborative efforts among law enforcement agencies.
